... I noticed the addition in the GBG and I'm glad to read here that it's doing well, I've not been out to Borough Green for a while so I'll have to make the effort to visit again, a very nice pub as I recall. Trencherman, Beerintheevening website, October 21st 2011

May I be the first to congratulate the landlady of this pub for a well deserved entry into the Good Beer Guide 2012. Beer wise you'll have a choice of four, two of which are local and regular house beers, always spot on, never a disappointment.

As for the pub itself I've never seen one so clean and well kept. Good food, a very nice atmosphere and a joyful absence of irritating TV's and fruit machines. A couple of years ago I wouldn't have set foot in this pub, it really was rather awful but now it's truly revived and thriving, a good thing to see when so many others are neglected or closing down.... if you havn't visited yet then I can thoroughly recommend you give it a try. rprichyp, Beerintheevening website, September 11th 2011

I just wanted to drop you a line to tell you how impressed I was with your pub.  I live in the locality but confess I had never visited before because the pub from the front looks a bit austere but when I ended up going there with some friends I realised how wrong I had been! Inside it's really lovely and the food was brilliant but best of all was the garden, what a hidden gem it is. I would now go so far as to say it's one of the best pubs in the area. Thanks for a very enjoyable afternoon. Via Email June 25th 2011

The Black Horse and Hoodens is now a very reliable real ale outlet, which now has four hand pumps, one of which is dedicated to Old Dairy Red Top from Rolvenden and interesting, changing beers on the others... CAMRA Draught Copy Summer 2011

Returning to the theme oflocal beers in local pubs, the Black Horse and Hoodens at Borough Green deserves a special mention. The landlady has expanded the real aleavailability from two handpumps to four selling an impressive range of good quality beers from many regional and local breweries in the process. Cask ale sales here are fast approaching lager sales by volume... CAMRA Draught Copy Spring 2011

As we were running early we made an unscheduled stop at the Black Horse and Hoodens at Borough Green and came across the best range and quality of beers that evening with O'Hanlon's 'Firefly', Rudgate 'Viking' and Woodeford's 'Wherry' on sale The beer range rotates and we will certainly arrange a scheduled stop in the next few weeks. I was very pleased with the new menu, more simple old favourites have been added which are much more affordable, perfect for me if I just want to grab a bite and can't be bothered to cook at home, I think I will be making good use of this in future! Hoodens visitors book, 29th December 2010

The food was supberb. My spatchcock quail starter left me trying to get anything possibly left off the bones and my partner's mackerel with chorizo and potato was quickly devoured. My confit lamb shoulder with astonishing garlic mash (more of a hint of garlic than a punch), pepperonata and caper jus was simply delicious. My colleague tells me her guinea fowl breast with home-grown creamed corn, toasted wild mushrooms and bacon was melt-in-the-mouth good. However, neither of us can stop talking about the best ice-cream we've ever had created by Simply Ice-creams in Ashford. Vine Magazine, Pub Of The Month Article, October 2010

I've just had an evening in the Black Horse/Hoodens restaurant, and what a fabulous evening. The food was supberb and presented wonderfully. The service was friendly and attentive. The knowledge of the menu was first class. The wine was excellent and very well priced. The bar area was friendly and welcoming and I look forward to just having a real ale there! Overall the experience far exceeded my expectation and I WILL be recommending it to all my friends. Beerintheevening review by Hewmatt, 2nd June 2010

Had a drink at the bar whilst waiting for friends as we had a table booked for the restaurant – nice atmosphere and husband loved the pint of cask ale. Had never eaten at Hoodens before but we certainly will again, even tho’ it’s a 25 min drive. The food was FANTASTIC – can’t believe it’s just two guys running the restaurant; it was beautifully cooked and presented, more than I could eat and very good value for money. We wish Russel and David well with Hoodens – they deserve to be successful.

Great pub, friendly bar staff and a super Landlady… I don’t live in Borough Green but I have found that the welcoming atmosphere, great food and choice of Ales is really good and worth the 25 min journey Beerintheevening review by The Evening Drinker, 13th April 2010

My wife and I went for dinner for two with a drink or two in the bar first. Friendly welcome, really good atmos from the locals but where this place really excels is the Hoodens@Black Horse restaurant. The food is easily multiple AA Rosette standard, beautifully presented, generous portions and excellent value. There’s also a bar menu which looks pretty eclectic if you’re looking for the same quality but cheaper. We’re going back for Sunday roast as soon as possible. I really hope this place succeeds as it’s not often you see quality like this off the beaten track. Beerintheevening review by ndeezy, 7th March 2010
